Carers UK appoint new Chief Executive: Helena Herklots

Carers UK is delighted to announce the appointment of a new Chief Executive, Heléna Herklots. Heléna, who spent seven years as Head of Policy at Age Concern England, will take over as Chief Executive at Carers UK on 1 February 2012. Heléna said, "It is an honour to join Carers UK as their new Chief Executive. Making a difference for carers and improving their lives is a cause very close to my heart."

 

Clarification on vital carers' benefits entitlements

Government confirmed that the eligibility for Carer’s Allowance would not be tightened with the introduction of the new disability benefit, the Personal Independence Payment (PIP). Lord Freud, Minister of State for Work and Pensions, stated that both rates of the daily living component of the new Personal Independence Payment would be used as a criterion to determine the entitlement to Carer’s Allowance.

 

End the care crisis: lobby 2012

In April the Government will publish its plans for social care reform. We want to lobby before this day to make sure that the Government listen and make sure the proposed changes cover the critical issue that we all want to see. On Tuesday 6th March 2012 we will hold a lobby of Parliament to take our message to MPs across all parties.

 

Carers UK welcomes new trustee 

Carers UK is delighted to welcome new trustee Richard Jones. Richard, Director of Adult Care in Lancashire, has recently been awarded a CBE for his services to adult social care - for all the work he did as President of the Association of Directors of Adult Social Services, and previously in the North West and his current policy and strategic work.

Carers UK would like to say a big thank you to everyone who supported us through the Text Santa and Radio 4 appeals. A huge amount of money was raised which will help towards providing new resources for carers across the UK.

Carers Week 2012 takes place from 18-24 June. This years theme is 'In sickness and in health'.

Coming soon - Carewell
Carewell, a partnership between Bupa, Carers UK and MEND is launching in just a few days. The aim of this partnership to is to help carers, and the people they care for, make positive changes to be healthier and happier. There will be a printed carers handbook and a new website where carers will be invited to discuss, share ideas and provide tips. Watch this space.
